What Protein Does for Your Child's Brain

How the food on your plate shapes the chemicals in your child's mind — explained simply.

Your child's brain contains billions of nerve cells that are constantly talking to each other — passing messages using chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals influence how your child feels, focuses, sleeps, and copes with the world.

What many parents don't realise is that the brain makes most of these chemicals from protein. Protein gives the brain the raw ingredients it needs. Without enough, production can slow down — and you may start to notice it in your child's behaviour and mood.

When your child eats protein, it gets broken down into amino acids. The brain then uses those amino acids to make the chemicals it needs to function well.

  • Protein-rich meals improve satiety — reducing the discomfort of constant hunger, which can itself drive distress or dysregulation.
  • Some autistic individuals have selective eating patterns that make getting enough protein challenging. Small, consistent additions can make a real difference over time.
